Are you planning on studying in Australia? Make sure to understand the requirements and costs  associated with the student visa first. Below are some common questions answered to guide you  through the process. 

 A student visa (subclass 500) allows international students to live and study in Australia for the  duration of their course. This visa permits full-time study at a registered education institution and  may allow limited work rights during study periods. 

To qualify for a student visa, you must:


  • Be enrolled in a full-time course at a registered Australian education provider and obtain  a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE);
  • Meet English language proficiency requirements, typically through IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE  tests;
  • Demonstrate financial capacity, proving you have sufficient finances to cover tuition, travel  costs, and living expenses;
  • Obtain Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of your stay;
  • Satisfy the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement, indicating your intention to  stay in the country temporarily for study purposes; and 
  • Meet health and character requirements.

 If necessary, undergo a medical examination and provide police certificates.

As of this writing, the base application fee for the student visa is AUD 2,000. Additional costs may  include health checks, police certificates, and the Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)  premium. Note that fees can vary based on varying circumstances.
